Tony Whiting

Dear Members,

It is with immense sadness that I inform you of the passing of Tony Whiting. He died peacefully on the 25th of  May 2022 in the Pilgrims Hospice in Canterbury. He had been a member for over 45 years and served on the committee for 43 of those years. He carried out several roles over his time on the committee, including Bar Chairman, Maintenance Chairman, and lastly Club President. He helped organise and promote many social gatherings at the club, which increased the appeal and helped attract new members. He played for 2nd and later 3rd teams for many years and always enjoyed playing, meeting, and socialising with the squash community. He ensured the 50th Anniversary of the club was a great success and was still playing into his 80s. He has been a key figure in the negotiations with St Edmunds school and the developers to relocate the Squash Club to the end of Giles Lane and secure a bright future for the club in the city. He had few regrets in life, however, one of them was he wouldn’t be around to see the new club completed, or the send-off we would give the current club!

Tony leaves behind his beloved wife Jean, sons Austin and Daniel, and his 3 grandchildren Ava, Isaac, and Isadora. We would like to thank Tony for all he has done for the club over so many years.

The funeral will be held at Barham Crematorium on Wednesday the 15th of June 2022 at 10:40am. This will be followed by the wake at the Duke of Cumberland in Barham.

For those who wish to attend the wake, could you please get in touch with Austin Whiting on 07801 741510 or awhiting@bordengrammar.kent.sch.uk so that he has an idea on numbers.

There is a Just Giving page set up in his memory to raise much needed funds for the Pilgrims Hospice. If you would like to make a donation please follow this link: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/tony-whitingcsrc

Tony was a real character and personality at the club, he will be dearly missed, by the committee, members and ex-members alike.

Austin Whiting
